Come South with us on a Blue Water Learning Adventure
Manhattan to Fort Lauderdale
Blue water sailing means just that. You see no land. Just miles and miles of blue sea. It’s an exhilarating and life-changing experience. The annual fall trip from northern latitudes to the Caribbean is something every serious sailor knows to be fun, challenging and necessary for future bragging rights.
Sunset Child, our J/120, will be departing from NYC on the second week of November and heading out into the Atlantic on an epic journey bound for Fort Lauderdale, FL. The trip should take a week and will be skippered by Marcus Cholerton-Brown, an extremely experienced Ocean Sailor with over 100,000 NM of water under his keel, including skippering such prestigious races as the Fastnet, Sydney to Hobart, Around Britain and Ireland, and the Clipper Around The World Race. Additionally, we shall have Tracy Spinney an ASA Sailing Instructor aboard who will teach courses 105 Costal Navigation and Advanced Costal Cruising 106, making this a real double whammy for those lucky enough to get a place. Tracy sailed Sunset Child from Antigua to Fort Lauderdale to Manhattan last spring with students gaining their 105 and 106 Certification through partnership with Blue Water Sailing School.
Also, we shall schedule a training sail before we depart to learn the boat and practice emergency drills in daylight and at night. Date and time forthcoming.
This trip is a great sailing adventure with the chance to gain valuable offshore sailing experience with two very experienced offshore skippers. Not to mention having a great time at some beautiful and fun filled venues.
Please note: This is a non-stop sail. We do not go down the Intra Costal Waterway and may be more than 120 miles offshore at times. Our watch system requires you to rotate time on deck and on the wheel. If going to the foredeck at 03:00 hours to change from a working jib to a storm jim in 28 knot winds and nine foot seas presents a problem to you, perhaps you should click here. Otherwise, as Skipper Marcus says, “Toughen up Buttercup!”. It’s a rite of passage that’s one of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have on the water.
When: We shall aim to depart NYC on November 7th. An additional bonus is a training sail before we depart to learn the boat and practice emergency drills in daylight and at night.
Where: We will depart Manhattan and then on to points south.
