Newport to St Maarten, Late October 2016. NARC

018 Gulf Stream USA
We will encounter the Gulf Stream by the time we reach Bermuda. With an opposing North wind, it can get interesting!

Blue water sailing means just that. You see no land. Just miles and miles of blue sea. It’s an exhilarating and life-changing experience. The annual fall trip from the Northern latitudes to the Caribbean is something every serious sailor knows to be fun, challenging and necessary for future bragging rights. And to do it as part of the famous NARC Rally is just the perfect added bonus.

Sunset Child, our J/120, will be departing from Newport, RI, on October 29th and heading out into the Atlantic on an epic journey bound for St Maarten via Bermuda. The trip should take two weeks and will be skippered by Tracy Spinney, an experienced Ocean Sailor and instructor with many miles of water under his keel. Tracy is an ASA Sailing Instructor and has sailed Sunset Child up and down this route many times, often incorporating the ASA 105 and 106 Certifications through partnership with Blue Water Sailing School.

BOYS-poster1
Bermuda and St Maarten have changed rather nicely over the years. After days and nights on a dry boat, its abundance of crew bars is welcome!

This trip is a great sailing adventure with the chance to gain valuable offshore sailing experience with an experienced offshore skipper. Not to mention having a great time at some beautiful and fun filled venues. As an added bonus we shall be in company with many other yachts as part of the famous NARC Rally, so there will be daily radio nets set up en route and great social activities at each stopover.

Please note: This is a non-stop sail. We do not go down the Intra Costal Waterway and may be more than 120 miles offshore at times. Our watch system requires you to rotate time on deck and on the wheel. If going to the foredeck at 03:00 hours to change from a working jib to a storm jim in 28 knot winds and nine foot seas presents a problem to you, perhaps you should click here. Otherwise, as Skipper Marcus says, “Toughen up Buttercup!”. It’s a rite of passage that’s one of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have on the water.

Fort Lauderdale to St Maarten late February ’16

Blue water sailing means just that.  Miles and miles of open blue sea. It is an exhilarating and life-changing experience.ocenblue

No machismo needed. Just ask the Aussie teen Jessica Watson about ocean sailing.
Sunset Child, our J/120, will be departing from West Palm Beach, riding the Gulf Stream to the top of the Bahamas then rounding down to St Maarten for her Winter Racing Season.  The trip should take a week and will be skippered by Tracy Spinney an experienced Blue Water Sailing School Instructor with over 4,000 sea mile11986501_10206416992736096_2962506384423022067_ns under his belt. Tracy sailed Sunset Child from Antigua to St Thomas then to Fort Lauderdale and then on to Manhattan last spring with students gaining their 105 and 106 Certification through partnership with Blue Water Sailing School. This sail will also allow you to achieve your ASA Advanced Costal Cruising 106 certification.

Even if you do not elect to test for 106, this trip will give you valuable ocean sailing skills and allow you to experience what few people have: A total escape from everything you know into a world that has inspired poets, adventurers and romantics for centuries.

No texts, no Facebook, no 24-hour news cycle. Just you, your mates, your boat, wind, waves and water. After making an ocean passage, the big stuff back home just doesn’t seem so big. In fact, you’ll likely want to do this again.

Dolphins came down with us from NYC but we were a bit busy to take photos. We expect more on this trip.

Please note: This is a non-stop sail.  Our watch system is 24-hours and requires you to rotate time on deck and on the wheel. While not as challenging as our annual sail from NYC to Florida, this is true blue water sailing. There are no places to “pull over”. And therein lies the appeal. We’re out here on our own with only our skills, our yacht and Neptune’s blessing. Winds and seas are usually agreeable. Unless they are not. Either way, we will sail safely, sail with joy and sail to increase our skills and love of the sport.

Here’s what one student has to say about his experience:
Getting out and sailing on the ocean is a bit different then racing, so if you ever had the thought of getting in a sailboat and traveling the world, this is a great introductory experience.
The Captains are world class with a tremendous depth of knowledge and experience, which provides for a safe passage and a great opportunity to learn.
The boat is a fast, reliable, offshore racer, perfect for this type of trip.
All the best, Charlie

Antigua to St Thomas

April 30th to May 6th 2016

Our first class of ASA 106 Graduates celebrate with their first adult beverage after seven days at sea on the sail South from New York City.
Following Antigua Sail Week we shall be re-rigging Sunset Child for cruising and sailing from Antigua to St Thomas via one fantastic destination after another. What’s not to love?
The 200 NM sail from Antigua to St Thomas is a great opportunity for crew to gain invaluable offshore experience with a world-class skipper, and add sea miles to your sailing resume. The sail itself should only take a few days, but we shall aim to take in some great stops along the way to give crew experience in entering new cruising grounds. All costs of passage are included except travel to and from the boat, shore actives and adult libations. Additionally, we shall offer ASA 106 Advanced Costal Cruising on the trip through partnership with Blue Water Sailing School. ASA levels 101, 103, 104 and 105 are prerequisites for the 106 Advanced Costal Cruising Certification. If you feel you have the sailing knowledge and experience to “challenge” any prerequisite level please contact us for details on options for pre certification.
Because we are racers at heart, our approach to instruction is a bit more intense than your usual sailing school. Come prepared to take it to the next level. Night sailing and un-announced MOB drills are part of the course. Sunset Child is built for speed, not comfort. If you’re looking for a nice, luxurious Catamaran with AC and private showers, this isn’t your trip. Unlike racing though, there’s usually no heavy drama and very little shouting. Usually…
When:  Board Sunset Child evening of Saturday  April 30th in Antigua; the class will end on the afternoon of Friday 6th May.
Where:  We shall depart from Antigua and sail for St Thomas. Other stop offs will be made en route as time and crew inclination allow. Options may include St Maarten, Virgin Gorda, Cooper Island, Jost Van Dyke, Nanny Cay, Norman Island and St Johns. We’re in the BVI. We sail where we want, most times…
What is Included:–
– Crew position on board offshore fitted J/120, Sunset Child
–  Professional Skipper/ASA Certified with extensive offshore experience
–  Full offshore safety equipment, including offshore PFDs with tether and spray hood
–  Victualing and berthing costs
–  Food and fuel
–  ASA Course 106 certification, Advanced Coastal Cruising
–  Additionally, certification in ASA course 105 Costal Navigation will be available.  Ask for details.
Package Cost:
– Crew position including ASA Course 105/106 Certification:   $2,495
Charts and Course books for 106 Advanced Costal Cruising are included.

When the wind cooperates, the crew is extremely experienced and we haven’t shredded our teaching spinnakers, we offer ASA 106 Spinnaker Endorsement. This includes instruction on spinn types, raising, driving, trimming, gybing and various dousing methods. This is a stand-alone class for alumni who already have their ASA 106 through BWSS or PYRUSA and is done over the course of two days. Ask your skipper for more info.

ST THOMAS TO NEWPORT, RI, VIA BERMUDA

May 7th – 20th 2016

Happy Crew On Sunset
Selfie on Sunset Child at sunset. The ride back should be one for the books.
When the sailing season winds down in the Caribbean, it’s time to head North!  No better way to do that than with a bunch of like minded sailors on a fast and safe 40′ yacht.
Sunset Child, our J/120, will be departing from St Thomas on May 7th and heading out into the Atlantic Ocean on an epic journey bound for Bermuda and onto Newport. The trip should take no kore than two weeks and will be skippered by Tracy Spinney, who is a senior American Sailing Association Instructor and USCG Master. He can also teach course 105 and 106 for a small additional price, making this a real double whammy for those lucky enough to get a place.
